Characteristics of this institute

Chongqing is rich in waterways transport resources, which has established its comparative advantages in western China. The institute has carried out a long-term and sustainable research on waterways transport and its co-development with relevant sectors. The institute integrates the western waterways transport logistics and relevant local sectors, comprehensively makes use of multi-disciplinary knowledge and means of logistics economics and industrial economics, develops research from the perspectives of enhancing the growth rate of relevant sectors by promoting the development of waterways transport, improving the industrial technological levels, and optimizing the industrial structures. The institute also promotes economic and social development of Chongqing and western regions.

Academic position

This institute has a wide impact on the western region and the transport sector, relying on the key disciplines of Chongqing Municipality - Management Science and Engineering. In the 1980s, the institute completed the first monographs on Transport Economics. Since the 1990s, the institute has completed various research projects, such asThe Research and Practice of the Yangtze River Open Channel Diversion and Navigation at Three Gorges,The International Border River Navigation Research and Development of the Lancang River,Improving the Navigable Capacity between Three Gorges and Gezhouba,Chongqing Port Optimization and Integration Scheme,Chongqing Port Development and Regional Economic Development Research, etc. The institute has studied and prepared the firstChongqing Modern Logistics Development Scheme, China first inland river port development schemeChongqing Waterways Transport Center Development Scheme,Chongqing Municipal Waterways Eleventh Five-Year Development Plan,Chongqing Municipal Waterways Transport Twelfth Five-Year Development Plan, etc. The institute has found solutions to many serious issues such as waterways transport and navigation during the construction of Three Gorges Project, which has made tremendous social and economic benefits.

In the meantime, the institute has proposed the concept of Chongqing Waterways Transportation Centre and its construction scheme and the development of Chongqing Waterways Transport Centre, the setup of Chongqing Waterways Transport Exchange Market and Indexes, winning one Level II award of China National Science and Technology Progress, one Level II award of provincial science and technology development, and three Level III provincial scholarships. The institute has published over 30 papers in SCI and EI journals. The institute has served as editorial director of the transport version ofTheLogistics inThe21stCenturyseries of textbooks, published 4 textbook monographs (2 of which are English) and published a series ofChongqingWaterways TransportDevelopment Report. The institute has also trained over 5000 people for waterways transport management.

The research pioneer, Professor Min Wu, got his PhD in The National University of Singapore and did his post-doc in Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the University of Reading in the UK. He is one of the Chongqing key academic leaders, currently serving as the editorial board of two international journals and reviewer of many international journals. Professor Maozeng Xu is holding several titles such as the executive director of China Logistics Association, vice president of Chongqing Waterways Transport Association (one of the founders) and the editorial board of one international journal.

Role and Significance

This institute aims to provide support for the development of the logistics sector for the Liangjiang New District and the industrial development for the western region.

Chongqing Municipality, one of the four municipalities and one of the most important central cities in China, is the economic and financial center of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River region, the waterways transport center of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, the processing base for inland exports and pioneering area of expanding the opening. Being an important modern manufacturing base of China, Chongqing is also known as the industrialization base of scientific research in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Waterways transport logistics and its co-development with relevant sectors attribute to improving its capability to attract resources, improving the technological advances of the industrial clusters, promoting infrastructure construction and aggregating of intra-regional resources. The institute has important practical and theoretical significance in exploring the development strategy with Chongqing as the center of radiation in the context of developing the China western regions, in serving local economy, and in training high-level post-graduate research students. Especially in the context that General Secretary Hu put forward the deployment of 314 for Chongqing in 2007, the research on waterways transport logistics and co-development of relevant sectors has the unique characteristics and strategic significance.
